The Everglades of South Florida encompass one of the largest wilderness ecosystems in eastern North America, and also support than 75% of the mangrove ecosystems in Florida. In the northern Everglades, where sawgrass marshes grade into red mangrove-dominated estuaries, we have established four long-term reference sites for Florida box turtle (Terrapene bauri). This project entered its 9th year in 2014, and is conducted in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Florida Panther and Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge), Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the National Park Service (Everglades National Park). The research is supported by the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit in Amherst, MA and is led by ATCA.
