Florida Panhandle

FOCAL SPECIES: Gulf Coast Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina major)

The Florida Panhandle is extremely rich in turtle species diversity, particularly of the subfamily Deirochelyinae (cooters, sliders, painted turtles, and map turtles). The Florida Gulf Coast also encompasses a large portion of the known range of the Gulf Coast box turtle (Terrapene carolina major), a large form of the Eastern Box Turtle. This study is conducted in partnership with the Turtle Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (St. Vincent NWR), the Florida State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
