Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)Though widespread in the eastern United States and formerly abundant in many areas along the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) has experienced population declines throughout its range. Populations in New England, at the northern limit of its range, are of conservation concern. We have studied and monitored populations of eastern box turtle at multiple locations in Massachusetts to inform long-term conservation efforts for this species, and we maintain a network of long-term observatories in the Connecticut River Valley now in its tenth year.
