Animal Care and Use
Our research protocols have been approved and are reviewed annually by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Reflecting a universal concern for freshwater turtle populations, our research protocols are nonlethal and include only minimally invasive techniques in wide use (radiotelemetry, individual marking, blood draws). In all cases we strive to minimize stress to turtles that are studied in the wild. We welcome feedback, comments, and questions. We work closely with veterinarians, wildlife managers, and other partners to minimize the short- and long-term impact of our research protocols on study animals.
On a related note, we are very concerned by emerging turtle diseases, including Ranavirus, and we take strong precautions to decontaminate equipment between sites. Please contact us to learn more.
